The Rise of Refrigerated Outdoor Rinks
Despite uncooperative weather conditions the past few years, the demand for outdoor ice continues to grow. In fact, it’s starting to heat up.
That’s right—outdoor ice is not exclusive to Minnesota, Massachusetts, or Michigan. HTG is seeing an uptick in refrigerated outdoor rink inquiries from much warmer climates like California. Even the NHL is embracing the elements: the 2026 Winter Classic will be held in Miami!
Requests to build refrigerated outdoor rinks are gaining steam throughout North America as rink owners and operators look for ways to add more value for customers without a big-ticket commitment.
5 Reasons to Build a Refrigerated Outdoor Rink
Extend Your Ice Season – Enjoy more months of high-quality ice, regardless of fluctuating temperatures.
Cost Savings – More affordable than building another indoor sheet while still delivering a premium skating experience.
Faster Construction – A refrigerated outdoor rink can be up and running in less time than an indoor facility.
Versatile Programming – Host outdoor tournaments, corporate events, community skate nights, and more.
Community Impact – Create a showpiece that fosters community engagement and local pride.
Case Study: United Heroes League
One shining example of a successful refrigerated outdoor rink is HTG’s work with the United Heroes League in Hastings, Minnesota. This nonprofit organization supports military families by making youth sports more accessible.
HTG proudly designed SCHEELS Rink, an NHL-sized, refrigerated ice sheet with professional-grade boards and glass. In January of 2026, it will welcome 15,000 visitors for Hockey Day Minnesota.
Currently in its second phase, the project is expanding with grandstands and locker rooms beneath the seating. Future plans include the possibility of fully enclosing the rink for year-round use. By taking a phased approach, the facility is able to grow in a cost-effective and strategic manner.
If you're already investing in boards, why not go the extra mile with a refrigerated slab to extend the ice season and maximize your return?
Refrigeration Technology
HTG is on the cutting edge of refrigeration systems. Newer refrigeration technologies are helping bring costs down while improving efficiency.
Does your system need to be set on an exterior skid right next to the rink? Does it need to be enclosed? What’s the best fit for your climate? HTG’s expertise ensures that every project is tailored to its specific environment, delivering optimal performance and longevity.
Raise the Roof
When in doubt, put a roof on it.
Adding a roof to a refrigerated outdoor rink is one of the best ways to further extend the season and protect the ice from the elements—rain, snow, sleet, and especially the sun. This is particularly important in warmer climates, where shade can make all the difference in maintaining professional ice quality and consistency.
HTG is seeing a growing number of requests throughout the Sun Belt, proving that outdoor ice is no longer limited to traditional cold-weather regions. Plus, ice sports like hockey continue to grow in nontraditional markets.
