From the start, we advocate for a robust pre-design phase to provide our owners and client groups with as much context and information as possible. 2. No sugarcoating: Our clients have a vision, and it might be solid, but at the end of the day, it’s our job to help them get there. We aren’t going to sugarcoat a situation, and we aim to foresee any roadblocks that might hinder their vision and goal. That way, you avoid going back to square one. Sure, things will change, but by being upfront in that InVision stage, you can’t put a price tag on knowing now versus knowing six or ten months from now. We’ve seen projects that started as remodels that turned into new construction – and ones that went the other way around. We like to hammer out the minutiae and see what is possible.
3. Understanding your budget: The project’s most significant part. We ensure you understand the proposed budget and help you create something that meets your goals and financial plans. Visions are meant to be grandiose but can get out of control quickly. We’ve seen groups that want multiple ice sheets in their rink with a set budget. But we can identify early on that maybe a one-sheet facility is more appropriate for the budget. From there, we can plan a future expansion and set parameters for the project, considering the long term.
4. Number accuracy: I’ve worked at three other architectural firms, and we didn’t provide the numbers as we do at HTG. We have such a specialized and experienced group to help provide accurate preliminary numbers. We use historical data from projects that might be similar and connect with our general contractor partners in real time to see how certain products and materials are priced out. Are we going to be dialed into the exact dollar amount? No, but we’ll get as close as we can and even put a wrench in there to factor in any unknowns that may come into play. There will always be some variability in pricing. Still, if we have a target budget, we can review whether or not that’s feasible and provide accurate cost estimates to keep you within budget.
5. Relationships are essential: This is the most significant piece of how we operate. We are a group that prioritizes the partnership of a project. We like to describe our process as building partnerships beyond buildings. It’s not just the architecture; it’s not just the construction; it’s about the relationship in the partnership. So when we put a project team together in our group, it’s our trusted advisors. It’s our design consultants and our longstanding relationships with general contractors.
